The Mont des Arts

A formal garden on a slope with the best free view in central Brussels, and the museums stacked around it.

What it costs

Free. The garden, the terrace and the view over the lower town to the Town Hall spire cost nothing.

Around it: the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, the Musical Instruments Museum in its Art Nouveau department store, and the Royal Library — each ticketed separately.

When to go

Any time. The terrace is a standard evening spot and the garden is lit after dark. The Musical Instruments Museum has a rooftop café with a view that costs only what you drink.

Getting there

Metro 1 or 5 to Gare Centrale, then up the steps. It is the hinge between the upper city and the lower one, which is the geography that explains Brussels.

If you only have an hour

Stand on the terrace for the view, walk down the steps into the lower town, and end at the Grand-Place. Free, downhill, and it is the walk that explains how the city is arranged.

What people get wrong

The garden is not old. The whole slope was cleared in the early twentieth century and left as waste ground for decades; the present layout dates from 1958, built for the same world’s fair as the Atomium.
